The Villa Chronicles

The prior owner of the building - a protected monument, rich in facade ornaments - was a dinky summer villa built in 1881. The Zala print reports two architectural handovers about holiday residencies that year - the first one was marked on the map right here, the property of a room painter, Gyivis. Based on an advertisement, two furnished rooms were available for rental, with an equipped kitchen. The building of János Gyivis occurs recurrently in the local guest lists.

The next owner could be assumed from Lujza Blaha’s diary:

"We found a German, filled with Hungarian affection, who was ef¬¬¬¬fected well by lake Balaton - Dr. Schiffner the resident of Vienna and a landlord in the plurals - came to spend a summer in Füred, his affection grown so much for the location he bought a plot of land next year, for a house and vineyard. Two years passed and the beautiful vacation villa was constructed, he has a yacht - a gasoline ship a nice little fleet. but that’s nothing! and now the appeal of Balaton: the Viennese German become a Hungarian citizen, who loved us so much, he decided to leave his flat in Vienna, bought a nice villa in Rijeka, where he spent his winters, but his summers in Füred, he just dropped by Vienna to collect the rent and spend every gulden in Hungary. We need more Germans like him - my husband’s very good friend and permanent hunting company."

The Blaha couple bought a summer villa in 1893, so the Viennese friend could’ve arrived later on, based on the bathing guest list as well. Hassenstab-Schiffner - lawyer and landlord - and his family, could have spent the holiday of 1899 in his own villa, as mentioned in the diary of Blaha.

Dr. Rudolf Hassenstab-Schiffner and Rezső spent the summer here since, they continuously made donations for the local hospital. in 1904 Rudolf came to Füred straight from Rijeka. At the ‘Belle of the Anna-Ball’ of 1908 Rudolf and his wife was in the company of the Blaha couple. in 1911 the most beautiful villa on the upper country road - Woodrow - was let for rent. Five room cabinet, maid suite and kitchen. Dr Shiffner spent the summer here till 1916. the next year someone unacquainted rented the place. the family name vanished from the documentation of Füred, post the first world war, presumably it was transferred to a new owner. in 1940 it was the property of the widowed Mrs. Nagy Lászlóné Csesznyák Elza. After the second world war crowds of families occupied the building. After the late 1970’s it belonged to the National Domestic Resorts. in the 1980’s it fulfilled its communal purposes, and became a private property. it served as a bed & breakfast, entertainment venue, currently unoccupied.
