A century ago, the world was turned upside down: by the 1920s, the culture of dress had been profoundly transformed along with it. Rules once regarded as set in stone vanished almost overnight. Jazz blared until dawn, champagne flowed in streams, and Fitzgerald laid the American Dream to rest.
An era marked by disillusionment, unrestrained joy, and rebellion brought sweeping changes to the world of fashion: Paul Poiret cast aside the corset, liberating the female body and creating bold new silhouettes; Jeanne Lanvin introduced the softly draped, embroidered Romanian peasant blouse into the elegant urban woman’s wardrobe; Klára Tüdős popularized garments adorned with traditional Hungarian embroidery; while Coco Chanel envisioned the foundations of the modern female wardrobe. By the end of the decade, a new kind of woman had emerged—free, confident, and equipped with a revolutionary wardrobe perfectly suited to an entirely new way of life.
The REVOLUTION exhibition at the Fashion Museum brings this story to life through a spectacular display of period garments, while also revealing how the “Roaring Twenties” continue to shape the way we dress today. The creative pairing of contemporary and vintage pieces vividly illustrates the enduring relevance and inexhaustible inspirational power of the era—an influence that continues to resonate not only in fashion, but across other artistic disciplines to this day.
